One of the favourite questions in any interview will be, "tell me about yourself". The question actually acts as an ice-breaker as the interviewer has yet to get the sense of whom you are.
This particular question also offers a good opportunity to describe yourself positively, focusing on your strength and abilities. Besides being an ice breaker, the question actually gives a lot of prospects into whether you are qualified for the specific position they offer.
The key to answer this question is to give answer or response that supports the career needs on the position you are applying. Try not to talk about your personal details such as hobbies, family, childhood experience, university life or extra curricular activities.
Most of the candidates have the wrong response for this question because 'telling about yourself' in the interview actually means telling how you can fit into the position offered, your strength and accomplishment.
Some techniques on answering this question are listed below. Try to understand the steps and give time to yourself to prepare the answers.
1. Provide the brief summary of your recent job.
Example: For the past five years, i have been working at Acme Technology as a sales manager, and this has given me a lot of skills to motivate and to train other people in achieving their goals.
2. Provide some insights on the last achievement with the company.
Example: I worked as a sales manager for the Techno Company and i was their top salesman for all the five years i worked there. Last year, the sales hit the record of one million sales by my group.
3. Show your ability and knowledge on the subject matter.
Example: I believe i would have a strong influence for the company as i am very positive, easy-going, hard working, people oriented and always willing to learn. (Give some details about your last job that requires you to portray the positive, hard working and other positive traits that you could remember)
4. Describe your strength accordingly and it must be related with the job prescription.
Example: One of my greatest strength that i have acquired during my working career is a good planing skill and decision making skill. This has always been my key factor in achieving my goal.(Share any incident that may prove your good decision making skill).
Apart from the above guidelines, of course you have to give a brief summary of your personal details (important ones) as appear in your resume. And try to put and arrange all details in an interesting manner. Highlight your success in an honest tune. Do not boast your strength but do not share your weakness if they have no interest in finding out about it. Lastly, try to go with the flow of confidence as this will convince them that you are the one they are looking for.
